About 40% of the wood we cut each year is "management" harvesting. Lightning strikes, tops broken out in ice storms, natural attrition, all have to be removed. Then there is the yearly thinning and removal of the least desirable trees.
Inevitably, 30% of the tree is turned into firewood. The tops are cut into wood to heat the house and shop. The slabs from the sawmill are stacked in a rack, and cut into firewood also.
